Dr John Gannon has spent over a decade helping students prepare for the HPAT exam (required for admission to undergraduate medicine in the Republic of Ireland). He now brings that experience to support students taking on the MSAT-Ulster.

Both exams are developed by ACER and examine students on similar skills: critical reasoning, quantitative problem-solving, and interpersonal understanding tested through multiple-choice questions rather than rote recall.

What is MSAT?

The MSAT (Medical Selection Admissions Test) is a standardised test used by Ulster University as part of its admissions criteria for a range of Allied Health Professional and Nursing courses, including Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Radiography, Podiatry, Speech and Language Therapy, and Nursing (Adult and Mental Health).

It’s a 2 hour 40 minute, computer-based exam assessing three areas: Critical Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Interpersonal Understanding. There’s no fixed syllabus and nothing to memorise, success comes down to genuine skill-building through practice, not subject knowledge.

There’s no pass mark. Instead, your MSAT score is used alongside your academic qualifications to rank you against other applicants, so thorough preparation to maximise your score matters. Ace the MSAT draws on the same reasoning-based teaching approach that’s built Ace the HPAT into a trusted name in Irish admissions test preparation.
